The Call for Proposals is now closed. Thank you all for the proposals, we are working on the lineup! Sign up for our newsletter to get notified about next year’s deadline.
The Fuse Festival is a one-day celebration of dance, taking place on July 1, 2017 on the Halifax Commons, as part of the HRM’s Canada Day event. The festival will present a variety of dance traditions, practices, cultures and forms.
From 11am-5pm, the Dance Stage will present a variety of performances, ranging from 20-50 mins in length.
The festival intends to present traditional, cultural and contemporary dance performances by community-based cultural organizations in collaboration with emerging, mid-career and professional dancers.
Performances may range from traditional to contemporary dance presentations, collaborations or fusion pieces. Proposals that include collaborations and elements that engage the audience (e.g. participation, knowledge sharing) are encouraged.
Our special dance stage will be approximately 30×20 feet (to be confirmed) and it will be covered to protect from the rain. All activities are free to the public and for all ages.
We want to bring an exciting afternoon of performances and activities. We want to encourage special ideas that showcase the diversity in our culture through dance. For example your proposal could include a performance only, or it could include aspects of participation with the audience: mini dance lessons or other ideas. If you do social dance, you could propose an open dance for the audience as part of your proposal. We hope to have an area for the audience to dance along.
Collaborations between groups and dance styles are encouraged. Combined proposals with other groups who do the same type of dance style or other dance styles are encouraged.
If you only have material ready for 5-10 minutes and are open to collaboration, let us know. If you would like us to help you connect with other groups or if you are a community group who would like assistance from a professional choreographer or dance mentor, we might be able to help. If you require dancers to participate in your performance, we might be able to help as well, let us know on your notes and we will see what we can do 🙂
Our festival is called FUSE and dance fusion will be a big part of it. However you do not need to do fusion if that is not your thing! We understand some dance forms call for it and others might not and it is a personal preference as well.
We accept ALL dance forms: traditional, cultural, classical, contemporary and social. We are not giving preference to one style over another, however we are looking for a balanced afternoon of programming.
Remember this is an open air event and the stage will be set up a day or two ahead, so you keep your tech as simple as possible. We still do not know the details on the stage or tech times so we are asking you therefore to keep it simple. There will likely be only a run through/tech rehearsal on FRIDAY June 30. We are aiming to keep the transitions between groups as smooth as possible.
